MOD. AP9

The A.A. Arms MOD. AP9 is a 1990s-era, semi-automatic 9mm large-format pistol that features a distinctive submachine gun-style design, a blowback operation, and a polymer lower receiver designed as a more refined competitor to the infamous TEC-9.

The A.A. Arms MOD. AP9 (commonly distributed by Kimel Industries) is a prominent piece of American firearm history from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Born out of the peak era of “assault pistols,” the AP9 was designed by Alfredo K. Keller to compete directly with the Intratec TEC-9. It shared a very similar submachine gun-style aesthetic—complete with a magazine well positioned forward of the trigger guard and a tubular receiver—but it aimed to provide a step up in manufacturing quality and overall reliability compared to its rivals.

Operating on a simple, robust straight-blowback system, the standard AP9 utilizes a 5-inch barrel paired with a durable parkerized steel upper receiver and a checkered black polymer lower frame. It features a manual safety selector, a hooded post front sight, and a closed-bolt mechanism chambered in standard 9mm Luger. Because it fed from high-capacity 20- and 32-round box magazines, the AP9 was highly sought after for its imposing silhouette and high-volume firepower. Though production ceased following the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, the MOD. AP9 remains a highly collectible cult classic among enthusiasts of retro, 90s-era tactical firearms.
