FFL and/or NFA Transfer with WSP SAFE Check
In Washington State, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) operates the centralized Secure Automated Firearms E-Check (SAFE) system to process all firearm background checks. Buyers initiate the required check through a licensed dealer, who will submit your information to WSP via the SAFE FFL Portal. This cost is currently $33 plus tax, and we collect this on behalf of Washington state. This is required and you only need x1 for any single group of transfers made at the same time.
For standard firearms from anywhere besides ALX Arms, whether Person-to-Person or Shop-to-Person, you must transfer the firearm using a Washington State Form 4473 and wait 10 business days. $30 for the first item, $10 for each additional item.
As of Oct 9th, 2026, you now have x2 options for transferring silencers and NFA items:
a) You can transfer a silencer or NFA item using a Washington State Form 4473 and potentially have it approved same day. The transaction is not logged with the ATF. Person-to-Person or Shop-to-Person, $30 for the first item, $10 for each additional item.
b) You can transfer a silencer or NFA item using a Federal Form 4 and potentially have it approved same day. The transaction is logged with the ATF. You may want to do this if you have a gun trust or if you prefer to have the item registered with the ATF. Person-to-Person or Shop-to-Person, $50 for each item.
